When I first took office, the Tribe had not drafted policy and procedure documents, nor had an HR process. In the course of the creation of our policies, I recalled that our relatives at the Miami Tribe had a Little Turtle day where they honored their famous leader. As a country we were also approaching Martin Luther King, Jr. Day which was created to be a day of service, encouraging all citizens in the US to do something of service to our community.
It was all of that in mind that we created a memorial day for ourselves, one that took the calendar day of when Tecumseh fell and the pan-Indian Resistance in the Eastern United States began to fall apart. Now we celebrate this day as a day not to be mournful or filled with regret, but to take up the challenge of pledging ourselves to our communities everywhere. Here, you can listen to Roy and I speak about Tecumseh Day.
